The Paralegal Picture: Best Internet Quotes for the Week Ending 03/14/09

Several of this week’s quotes reflect the effects of a recessive economy, as one legal assistant contributes to a shelter program which helps families in financial distress buy pet food, and two laid off legal assistants attend job fairs. One legal assistant is simply grateful to be alive after being struck by lightning in 2002. All of them remind me to be grateful for the gift of life and the ability to help others, as well as the need to encourage and support our colleagues who are struggling to find work.

“I’ve seen little children from the lowest level of poverty, and I know how important that little dog is that sleeps with them at night. It brings them such security and happiness. I can’t think of how hard it would be to lose that dog. So this is the least I can do.” ~ by Florida legal assistant Holly O’Brien, who has been the board president of the Humane Society of Tampa since 1998 and gave up wine for Lent. She’s going to spend the money she would normally have spent on wine at dinner or for entertaining to buy pet food for the shelter’s assistance program, which helps families in financial distress feed their pets. “There are so many people applying for one job. I come to all the career fairs. You see so many people … so many of us are unemployed.” ~ Michigan legal assistant Monique Wright, who lost her job about a year ago and was one of 6,000 people attending the Cobo job fair in Detroit last week. (Detroit Free Press)

“You have to make sure your resume is sharp and do everything you can to network yourself.” ~ New York legal assistant Denise Jordan, who was laid off three weeks ago after working seven years at a law firm, and attended the Hudson Valley Community College job fair last week. (WNYT.com)

“I don’t in any way feel lucky for being struck by lightning. But I do feel lucky for having survived.” ~ Kansas legal assistant Traci Pillard, who survived being struck by lightning in 2002, and still has a bag of shredded clothes from the incident. (Lawrence Journal )
