Today’s Quote: Do We Really Want a Mother’s Day Without the M-Word?

“I’d like to not hear the word ‘mom’ for 24 hours. I want a day off from being CEO of the household, where I don’t have to think about who has to go where and what has to be done by when.” ~ Elizabeth Crippen, a West Palm Beach paralegal with two boys, ages 10 and 11.

Hmmmm, being a mom sounds a whole lot like being a paralegal, with the constant thinking about who has to go where and what has to be done by when. No wonder she wants a day off.
I didn’t even think of asking my kids not to wail or whine “Mom” for a WHOLE day (an hour seems like a lot), but it would be awesome if they would ask me what I want for dinner for a change – or demonstrate that they really do know how to turn the vacuum cleaner on.
What do you want for Mother’s Day? Peace and quiet? Flowers and chocolate? Someone else to unload the dishwasher?

  1. My son, who just turned 17, took me out for dinner tonite for my Mother's Day celebration. I am blown away, because this required thinking ahead, which he hasn't always been real strong in; earning money thru babysitting AND more importantly, realizing that I would be traveling this weekend so he needed to push up the date.

So tell Elizabeth these are the moments that make all that grueling work–which seems so thankless at the time–worth it. To see your child growing up, becoming a young adult, and liking what you see…I couldn't ask for a better mom's day celebration.
