Virtual Paralegalism

The Blog Formerly Known As Practical Paralegalism

Today’s Quote: This Is Beyond the Pale, Even for Ambulance-Chasing

My call to the number Tuesday afternoon was answered by a male voice saying, “hotline.” I inquired if this was the VA Medical Center Palo Alto and was told, “This is not the actual medical center, no, but we do advertise on their website.” I identified myself as a reporter and, when asked, he identified himself as a legal assistant at Seeger Weiss. He took my number and said he would have the appropriate person get back to me for comment on whether the site was misleading. No one did until I renewed calls to the Seeger Weiss firm Wednesday morning. ~ Reporter Roger Parloff, writing for CNN Money, uncovered fake hospital websites allegedly operated by plaintiffs’ law firms that were searching for clients with asbestos-related diseases.

Huh. Law firm sponsored “VA Medical Centers” preying on elderly veterans? Virtual ambulance-chasing reaches a new, and according to several ethics experts interviewed by Parloff, unethical low.

But thanks to Parloff, these sites were, as of his last writing, suddenly unavailable.
