I realized the other day that one of the reasons I started blogging about career wear, long before I braved the harsh realities of the camera myself, is to show that you can get dressed for conservative offices on a budget, often for less than $50 an outfit (maybe not including shoes).

Case in point is this outfit. I needed a plain black turtleneck, and I needed more skirts that fit. But a good skirt is hard to find. Maybe women aren’t wearing them as much anymore? Target filled the bill with this fully lined pencil skirt ($19.99) and this turtleneck ($12.99). The shoes were on a Ross Dress for Less clearance rack last year, and the tights are from We Love Colors.

iPad in hand but eyes closed. I had to use this picture because it was the only good one of the belt. Skirt (Target); Turtleneck (Target); Belt (Loft sale); Tights (We Love Colors); T-strap pumps (Ross Dress for Less); Earrings from my Bubbling with Fun set (Jada’s Jewels)

This terrific skirt is sold out at Target online in regular sizes but still available in petite. You might check your local stores, which is where I got mine.

Mossimo TRS Herringbone Pencil Skirt ~ $19.99 (Target)

I got a new bag recently from Steinmart, which cost about $7.00 after sales and coupons. You do not want to go purse-shopping with me, because my main goal is to make sure the bag is split down the center, with enough room for my iPad in its new keyboard folio.

What is the most important thing you look for when you’re purse-shopping?
